One day when you have time to spare and feel like taking a drive, I want to suggest you visit Great Falls National Park in McLean, Va. The park has a lot to offer.
It is rich in history, boasting visits from Captain John Smith and George Washington, to the cutting edge technology of its time when the lock system was built. It is also a recreational mecca, offering hiking trails, picnic areas a beautiful waterfall system and some of the most challenging river rapids in Virginia.
If you do go, heed the warnings of the park and the Rangers to stay out of the river. During my family's visit last weekend we watched first hand a U.S. Park Police rescue of a hiker who didn't heed the warnings. This guy went out into the river, climbed the rocks above a fall, then went down by the spout. Then guess what? He was stuck.
This required "Eagle 1" the code name for the U. S. Park Police helicopter to come pluck him off the rocks. See the photos below. Click on the photos to see a larger version.
